OK. Thanks. I realised Latino was much broader than Mexican. I was just concerned that for some reason I was unaware of Mexicans didn't consider themselves Latino! Yes, the Spanish speaking world has a very rich history and culture, and enormous ethnic and linguistic diversity. As does English. The result of 2 competing empires. Perhaps that's why we don't view "Hispanic/Latino" as an ethnicity but rather as a linguistic grouping. I'm now very interested to know how the Spanish view Latin Americans and will endeavour to find out from my Spanish friends. Do Americans include the Spanish in "Hispanic/Latino"? Also, I share your interest in languages. I studied French and Spanish at university and am an EFL teacher. Still trying to perfect all of them! -

In a simple form (with all due respect to all Spanish speaking peoples) - Mexican refers to those from Mexico and Latinos refer to those from Latin American (Mexico, Central America, South America). I lived in an International dorm in my college years and we had Spanish speaking students from Colombia, El Salvador, Chile, and Puerto Rico. All had slightly different cultures and traditions but also shared some same things. The most intriguing part for me was the differences in their Spanish - how fast or slow they spoke, whether or not they ran words together, how they pronounced certain letters, and other attributes. I was studying Spanish at the time and found it all quite fascinating since I was, and still am, quite interested in word origins and how languages change from region to region and through time. -

They've integrated really well here. We just see them as exotic and often sexy, at least the music is. They have a completely different reputation from what it seems they have in the US, going by your cop shows. There's no gang culture or crime. They're very positively viewed - great food, great music. Obviously they're not here in the numbers that they are in the US but it's still a substantial group. I think the largest group are Colombians. I didn't know there was a difference between Mexican and Latino. Would you mind explaining what that is? I don't want to offend anyone. -
