So true, a beautiful scene and does the same for me.  Hoss may not have been as universally attractive as Joe and Adam, but in this you see the pure beauty of a soul.  This was the ep that began the love and loss theme for the Cartwrights boys but, for me, it's also the ep where Bonanza steps away from the standard westerns of the time - the stoic, tough guys who fight the baddies.  Here we see a family sharing heartbreak and showing emotions and emotional support without losing one ounce of manliness.  The ending is so well done, when Hoss returns from his soul-searching.   No words are needed.  He's handed an axe, a smile and a squeeze on the shoulder.  Great stuff. It's a fine performance by Dan Blocker who was a wonderful, natural actor.  Inger Stevens is beautiful and fragile as the doomed Emily and John Larch is suitably nasty as her greedy fiancé Blake McCall. My favourite scene?  I go with JC* on this and agree - the goldback fern scene.

That one scene of Hoss looking up at Emily with pure love shining out of every pore, and she touches his face, oh, gosh, that gets me every time. He was so full of hope and now he has to let her go, and he knows she’s going away to die... Curse you Bonanza writers, how could you do that to such a lovely guy.    It’s not an episode I watch a lot though, so it’s somewhat hazy in my mind. But I do recall this is one of the ‘get off my land’ episodes where the C’s take offence at interlopers. I personally liked that side of them, but I think they were a bit mean in this case.
